Januar</a> <a href="1902" title="1902">1902</a> in <a href="Hamburg" title="Hamburg">Hamburg</a>) war eine hamburgische Wohltäterin.

<p>Jauch war die Tochter des Uhrmachers Nicolaus Georg Stubbe in Kiel. Im Alter von 26 Jahren heiratete sie den hamburgischen <a href="Gro%C3%9Fb%C3%BCrger" title="Großbürger">Großbürger</a> und Oberleutnant der <a href="Hamburger_B%C3%BCrgermilit%C3%A4r" title="Hamburger Bürgermilitär">Hanseatischen Kavallerie</a> Moritz <a href="Jauch_(Hanseatengeschlecht)" title="Jauch (Hanseatengeschlecht)">Jauch</a> (1804–1876), Sohn des Großkaufmanns <a href="Johann_Christian_Jauch" class="mw-redirect" title="Johann Christian Jauch">Johann Christian Jauch senior</a> (1765–1855). Ihren Mann überlebte sie um 26 Jahre.

</p><p>Der einzige Sohn des Ehepaares, Hermann Jauch (1858–1916), war <a href="Grundherr" class="mw-redirect" title="Grundherr">Herr</a> auf <a href="Herrenhaus_Sch%C3%B6nhagen" class="mw-redirect" title="Herrenhaus Schönhagen">Schönhagen</a> und Erbauer des dortigen <a href="Herrenhaus_(Geb%C3%A4ude)" title="Herrenhaus (Gebäude)">Herrenhauses</a>.

</p><p>Andere Familienmitglieder engagierten sich nach Auguste Jauchs Tod in den von ihr gegründeten Stiftungen. Ihrem Beispiel folgten <a href="August_Jauch" title="August Jauch">August Jauch</a> (1848–1930), Herr auf Fernsicht, und Robert Jauch (1856–1909), Herr auf Krummbek. Beide verzichteten – nicht auf Erwerb angewiesen – auf das Leben auf ihren Landgütern, wechselten nach Hamburg und widmeten sich dort ebenfalls karitativen Aufgaben.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Wirken">Wirken</h2></div>

<p>Jauch gründete mehrere wohltätige <a href="Stiftung" title="Stiftung">Stiftungen</a>, denen sie aus dem Erbe, das ihr Mann ihr hinterlassen hatte, umfangreiche Mittel zuwandte. Im Mittelpunkt ihres Engagements stand die Linderung des Elends der armen Schichten Hamburgs. Diese lebten unter menschenunwürdigen Bedingungen in den sogenannten <a href="G%C3%A4ngeviertel_(Hamburg)" title="Gängeviertel (Hamburg)">Gängevierteln</a>.

</p><p>Sämtliche Stiftungen stattete Jauch neben den Stiftungshäusern mit so reichlichem <a href="Kapital" title="Kapital">Kapital</a> aus, dass selbst die <a href="Inflation" title="Inflation">Inflation</a> ihre Tätigkeit zunächst nicht einschneidend behinderte. Erst die Zerstörung aller drei Stiftungshäuser in den Bombennächten der <i><a href="Operation_Gomorrha" title="Operation Gomorrha">Operation Gomorrha</a></i> 1943 in Hamburg und während der <a href="Luftangriffe_auf_Kiel" title="Luftangriffe auf Kiel">Luftangriffe auf Kiel</a> schränkte das Wirken der Einrichtungen nachhaltig ein. In der Folge wurden die in Hamburg ansässigen Stiftungen nach dem <a href="Zweiter_Weltkrieg" title="Zweiter Weltkrieg">Zweiten Weltkrieg</a> von der Hamburgischen Stiftungs<a href="Beh%C3%B6rde" title="Behörde">behörde</a> aufgelöst; ihr verbliebenes Restvermögen wurde der Stiftung <i>Gast- und Krankenhaus</i> übertragen.

</p><p>Neben der Betreuung ihrer eigenen Stiftungen förderte Auguste Jauch tatkräftig die <a href="Rauhes_Haus" class="mw-redirect" title="Rauhes Haus">Innere Mission</a> <a href="Johann_Hinrich_Wichern" title="Johann Hinrich Wichern">Johann Hinrich Wicherns</a>. Der Hamburger Bürgermeister <a href="Johann_Georg_M%C3%B6nckeberg_(Politiker%2C_1839)" title="Johann Georg Mönckeberg (Politiker, 1839)">Johann Georg Mönckeberg</a> hielt der stadtbekannten <a href="Philanthrop" class="mw-redirect" title="Philanthrop">Philanthropin</a> die Grabrede und würdigte ihre Verdienste um das Sozialwesen der Stadt.

<p>Im Jahr 1884 errichtete sie in <a href="Kiel" title="Kiel">Kiel</a> neben der <a href="Jakobikirche_(Kiel)" title="Jakobikirche (Kiel)">Jakobikirche</a> ein <a href="Stift_(Kirche)" title="Stift (Kirche)">Damenstift</a>, das sogenannte <i>Damenstift aus Dankbarkeit</i> für „gebildete, unverheiratete Damen“,<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> beide Gebäude 1944 zerstört.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading3"><h3 id="Auguste-Jauch-Stift">Auguste-Jauch-Stift</h3></div>

<p>Im Jahr 1892 ereignete sich in Hamburg der letzte große <a href="Choleraepidemie_von_1892" title="Choleraepidemie von 1892">Ausbruch der Cholera</a> auf deutschem Boden, der aufgrund hamburgischer Besonderheiten verheerende Ausmaße annahm. Bereits in den Jahren 1822, 1831, 1832, 1848, 1859, 1866 und 1873 war Hamburg von kleineren Cholera-Epidemien betroffen gewesen.

</p><p>Jauch führte seit etwa 1879 angesichts des Elends in den Armenvierteln selbst regelmäßige <a href="Armenspeisung" title="Armenspeisung">Armenspeisungen</a> in Hamburg durch und bemühte sich zugleich, die Wohnverhältnisse der Armen zu verbessern.

</p><p>Sie erwarb das Haus Bürgerweide 59 in <a href="Hamburg-Borgfelde" title="Hamburg-Borgfelde">Hamburg-Borgfelde</a> und richtete dort im Jahr 1889 Freiwohnungen für bedürftige Witwen sowie eine <a href="Suppenk%C3%BCche" title="Suppenküche">Suppenküche</a> mit Speiseräumen für arme Kinder ein, in der täglich 50 Kinder beköstigt wurden.<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Die Bürgerweide war ein bevorzugter Standort für Stiftungen; dort befanden sich unter anderem das <a href="Hiobs-Hospital" title="Hiobs-Hospital">Hiobs-Hospital</a><sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und die <a href="Alida_Schmidt-Stiftung" title="Alida Schmidt-Stiftung">Alida Schmidt-Stiftung</a>.

</p><p>Diese Stiftung war Jauch ein besonderes Anliegen; sie verwaltete sie bis zu ihrem Tode selbst.

<p>Im Jahr 1891 widmete Auguste Jauch gemeinsam mit ihrem Sohn Hermann das alte <a href="Hamburg" title="Hamburg">Hamburger</a> Stammhaus der <a href="Jauch_(Hanseatengeschlecht)" title="Jauch (Hanseatengeschlecht)">Familie Jauch</a> am Stadtdeich 9 der Umnutzung in ein Stift mit Freiwohnungen „für alleinstehende, in ihrer Arbeitsfähigkeit beschränkte alte Männer aus dem <a href="Arbeiter" title="Arbeiter">Arbeiterstand</a>“ einschließlich freier Kost.<sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

</p><p>Das Haus war das frühere <a href="Kontor" title="Kontor">Kontor</a> von <a href="J._C._Jauch_%26_S%C3%B6hne" title="J. C. Jauch & Söhne">J. C. Jauch & Söhne</a>. Nach dem Erwerb (auch als Stadtdeich 10 nummeriert) wurde es als „Jauchsches Haus“ bezeichnet.<sup id="cite_ref-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Im westlichen Teil des Stadtdeichs hatten Kaufleute aus der Innenstadt nach 1700 ihre reich ausgestatteten Landhäuser errichtet, zu denen auch der Stadtdeich 9 gehörte. Von hier aus wurde der Holzhandel mit Frankreich, England, Spanien und Portugal betrieben, weshalb nach und nach Holzhändler und Sägewerksbesitzer am Stadtdeich ihren Sitz nahmen. Der Stadtdeich wurde nun auch Krondiek oder Kronendeich genannt, weil in seinem der Stadt zugewandten Teil „reiche, feine Leute“ im Gegensatz zur ärmeren Umgebung wie dem südlichen <a href="Hammerbrook" class="mw-redirect" title="Hammerbrook">Hammerbrook</a> wohnten. Der östlich gelegene Teil des Stadtdeichs wurde, nachdem das Grundstück durch verschiedene Zukäufe erweitert worden war, als „achter Jauch sin Plank“ bezeichnet.<sup id="cite_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-8" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-8"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>8<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

</p><p>Im Jahr 1899 beherbergte das Stift 21 Personen. 1933 wurde das Barockhaus nach umfassender Sanierung unter der Nummer 107 in die <a href="Liste_der_Kulturdenkm%C3%A4ler_im_Hamburger_Bezirk_Hamburg-Mitte" title="Liste der Kulturdenkmäler im Hamburger Bezirk Hamburg-Mitte">Liste der Kulturdenkmäler im Hamburger Bezirk Hamburg-Mitte</a> eingetragen. Es wurde 1943 während der <a href="Operation_Gomorrha" title="Operation Gomorrha">Operation Gomorrha</a> zerstört, ist aber in einem der wenigen Aquarelle von <a href="Ebba_Tesdorpf" title="Ebba Tesdorpf">Ebba Tesdorpf</a> um 1880 festgehalten.

<p>Auguste Jauch besaß eine umfangreiche Sammlung von Gemälden<sup id="cite_ref-9" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-10" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und Asiatica, aus der sie verschiedenen Institutionen Einzelstücke stiftete.<sup id="cite_ref-11" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-11"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>11<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-12" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-12"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>12<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Einen Teil dieser Stücke hatte sie auf Fernost-Reisen erworben, die sie bis nach Japan führten.<sup id="cite_ref-13" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-13"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>13<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-14" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-14"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>14<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Auguste Jauch erreichte die Nachricht vom Tode ihres Mannes in Hamburg während einer ihrer Fernreisen in <a href="Istanbul" title="Istanbul">Istanbul</a>. Auf die telegraphisch übermittelte Nachricht soll sie der Überlieferung zufolge zurückgekabelt haben: „Beerdigt ihn würdig.“
